In a bold and forward-thinking initiative, Liceo Aguadillano has embarked on a transformative journey towards sustainability, embodying a commitment to environmental responsibility and fostering a greener, more Eco-conscious campus while creating awareness. Motivated by a profound sense of duty to current and future generations, the school has adopted a comprehensive “Go Green” strategy that will permeate every aspect of its operations.

At the heart of this green revolution is the recognition of the pressing global environmental challenges we face today. The school’s leadership understands that education extends beyond textbooks and classrooms; it is a holistic experience that shapes responsible citizens and stewards of the Earth. By integrating sustainable practices into the fabric of the institution, Liceo Aguadillano is taking meaningful steps to reduce its ecological footprint and instill a sense of environmental awareness among its students, staff, and the wider community.

As part of the school’s commitment, the first phase of a solar energy system was recently completed. Specifically, a 7kW solar system consisting of thirty 235W panels, hybrid inverter and 10kW Lithium battery, donated by parents and community members was installed. This system addresses the basic power needs (emergency mode to continue functionality) of the administration building and the Pre-K through Second grade building. In the near future, 3 other phases will be completed to cover the entire energy requirements of the school. This is contingent on continuing successful fundraising activities.

Additionally, high-efficiency LED lighting sources will gradually replace traditional fixtures, contributing to significant reductions in energy consumption. These measures not only align with the school’s environmental goals but also serve as valuable educational tools, allowing students to witness firsthand the positive impact of green technologies.

In addition to energy initiatives, Liceo Aguadillano students Luca and Kai Rivera started a tree planting program “Care for My Tree” in efforts to ameliorate the effects of climate change. To date, they have planted 30 trees in the Aguadilla community and hope to establish next year a school and community-driven program to plant many more trees, including within the campus where students will take care of the new trees with the help of school staff.

Waste reduction and recycling programs: The school encourages a culture of responsible consumption, emphasizing the importance of recycling and waste segregation. Earlier in 2023, total of 6 water-filtering stations were installed throughout the campus to encourage drinking water as opposed to sweetened beverages, and also to reduce plastic bottle waste by refilling reusable bottles.

Composting stations are strategically placed across the campus, transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich compost that nurtures the school’s lush green spaces. Through these initiatives, Liceo aims to cultivate a sense of environmental stewardship among its students, empowering them to make informed choices that contribute to a sustainable future.

Furthermore, the school is committed to incorporating sustainability into its curriculum, ensuring that environmental education becomes an integral part of every student’s learning experience. From science and biology to social studies and economics, Liceo is weaving sustainability into the academic fabric, fostering a generation of environmentally conscious leaders who will drive positive change in their communities.

By going green, Liceo Aguadillano is not merely adopting a trend but embracing a transformative philosophy that aligns with its core values. Through these initiatives, the school is creating a campus environment that not only reflects a commitment to ecological responsibility but also serves as a living laboratory for sustainable practices. We are setting an inspiring example for educational institutions nationwide, demonstrating that a green future is not only desirable but achievable through collective effort and a shared commitment to the well-being of our planet.
